The notes on each of the six strings are shown. The notes in black start with E (lowest-pitch string) and stop just short of E an octave higher. The notes starting with E an octave higher, and stopping just short of E another octave higher, are in blue. The notes in the next octave are in red. The notes in the fourth octave (there are only three if one goes to the 15th fret) are in purple. What I call position A on the guitar (the one most people first learn), usually called the first position, goes from open through fret 4. Position B (I believe it's usually called the fifth position) is from fret 5 through fret 8. Position C (I think the 9th position) is from fret 9 through fret 12. Position D (the 13th position?) is from fret 13 through fret 16 (although on an acoustic guitar, it's hard to go past the 13th fret).
